Following a Unique Path Leads to a Prestigious Fellowship
Willow Coyote-Maestas is the first University of Minnesota graduate student to receive the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Gilliam Fellowship. His research in the area of focuses on ion channels whose misregulation is involved in numerous neurological and cardiac diseases. Willow's findings could have great application in developing improved drugs for neurological and cardiac disorders.
University of Minnesota Postdoctoral Associate Named Hanna H. Gray Fellow
University of Minnesota postdoctoral associate Jose L. Alejo, PhD, has been named a Hanna H. Gray Fellow by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI).
2018-2019 Endowed Fellowship Recipients
To support advanced graduate students in the humanities. Norman Johnston Dewitt received his A.B. degree at the University of Toronto in 1930 and his Ph.D. in Latin at Johns Hopkins University in 1938. He came to the University of Minnesota in 1949 and served as chair of the classics department from 1949 to 1964.
2018-2019 Doctoral Dissertation Fellows
The Graduate School is pleased to announce the 2018-2019 Doctoral Dissertation Fellows. The Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship (DDF) gives the University's most accomplished PhD candidates an opportunity to devote full-time effort to an outstanding research project by providing time to finalize and write a dissertation during the fellowship year.

2018 Best Dissertation Award Winners
Congratulations to the winners of the 2018 Best Dissertation Award! One graduate student from each of four groups – arts and humanities, biological and life sciences, physical sciences and engineering, and social sciences and education – was chosen by faculty from the broad disciplinary area.
Cobell Graduate Summer Research Fellowship Awarded
Indigenous Education, Inc. is pleased to announce that John Little, doctoral student in American History at the University of Minnesota, is a 2018 recipient of the distinguished Cobell Graduate Summer Research Fellowship administered on behalf of the Cobell Board of Trustees. Each year, Indigenous Education, Inc. solicits applications for highly competitive research projects to be conducted during the summer at institutions across the country.
2018 Fulbright Scholarship Awarded
John Cossette, Ph.D. student in Ecology, Evolution and Behavior, has won a prestigious Fulbright Scholarship for the upcoming academic year. Cossette will work with a research group at the Institute of Integrative Biology in Zurich, Switzerland, determining the role of individual traits, social history, and genetic factors in the evolutionary transition from individual cells to cooperative multicellular groups.
MnDRIVE Global Food Ventures Graduate Fellows Announced
Eight graduate students who are working toward their master’s or doctoral degree from the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences; the College of Veterinary Medicine; and the School of Public Health were recently awarded fellowships from Minnesota’s Discovery, Research, and InnoVation Economy (MnDRIVE) for the 2018-2019 school year.
