What is the Distinguished Master's Thesis Competition?
The Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools (MAGS) solicits nominations in two of four categories that alternate every year.
In 2027, MAGS is seeking nominations for the Distinguished Master's Thesis Awards in the broad categories of Social Sciences; and, Mathematics, Physical Sciences, and Engineering.
What is the application window?
The 2027 nomination window will open September 9, 2026. The submission deadline is October 16, 2026 by 5:00pm central time. Deadline extensions will not be granted; late submissions will not be accepted.
What is the award?
$500 honorarium and nomination to the MAGS’ annual Distinguished Master’s Thesis competition.
How do I apply?
Program Nomination required. Programs can nominate up to one (1) student. Please reach out to your Director of Graduate Studies or Graduate Program Coordinator.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
A single PDF nomination file should include documents #1-4, in the following order:
1. One-page nomination letter, signed by the DGS.
2. 300-word abstract describing the research and its significance, including the thesis title and name of the author but not the name of the nominating institution.
3. Full Thesis
4. Letter of support from the advisor.

What are the eligibility requirements?
To be considered, applicants must meet all of the following criteria:
- Department Nomination: Applicants must be formally nominated by their graduate program. Internal nomination processes vary by graduate program, so applicants should contact their Director of Graduate Studies (DGS) or Graduate Program Coordinator (GPC) to inquire about their department's specific nomination procedures and internal deadlines. To locate your DGS or GPC, please refer to this list.
- Academic Status: Applicants must be a current student in, or graduate of, a University of Minnesota research-based, thesis-track (Plan A) master's program.
- Academic Progress: Applicants must have been awarded a Master's degree between July 1, 2024 and June 30, 2026.
- Research Focus: Applicant's thesis is in the disciplines of either Social Sciences; or Mathematics, Physical Sciences, and Engineering.
- Prior Academic History: Applicants must be pursuing their first research degree, regardless of discipline.
Note: Applicants meeting all of the above eligibility requirements can apply regardless of citizenship status.
