What is the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship Program?

The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program provides funding to the very best postdoctoral applicants, both nationally and internationally, who will positively contribute to the country's economic, social, and research based growth. The objectives of the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program are to:

  • attract and retain top-tier postdoctoral talent, both nationally and internationally
  • develop their leadership potential
  • position them for success as research leaders of tomorrow

The Banting Fellowship is a two-year, non-renewable fellowship that carries a stipend of $70,000 (taxable) per year. Approximately 70 fellowships are awarded annually, and are distributed equally among:

Who Is Eligible? 

Applicants for the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship from the University of Minnesota must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents.

How do I apply?

Applicants apply directly to the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship, collaborating with the host institution, University of Minnesota (UMN), on several components of the application. The Banting website has a helpful Application Guide.

Applicants are encouraged to contact the UMN department where they wish to secure a postdoctoral appointment early in the Banting application process.

Applicants should also contact the Graduate School Fellowships Office (GSFO) at gsfellow@umn.edu early in the process to notify the Associate Director of the department (and name of potential supervisor) to which they are applying.

The deadline to notify the GSFO (email gsfellow@umn.edu) for the 2023 application cycle is August 24, 2022. 

The GSFO will work with the hiring UMN department supervisor to complete the Institutional Letter of Endorsement. The GSFO will provide the Institutional Letter of Endorsement to the Banting applicant no later than September 14, 2022. The Banting application submission deadline is September 21, 2022.
