What are Training Grant Matching Funds?

The Graduate School provides matching funds for pre-doctoral training grant proposals on an ongoing basis to improve the competitiveness of these proposals and to help leverage other internal sources of matching support.

Due to funding constraints, the Graduate School has temporarily suspended the training grant matching fund program. Please contact [email protected] with any questions.

How Are Proposals Selected?

Priority consideration is given to proposals that:

  • Require institutional matching fund by the funding agencies.
  • Have secured matching support from other University unit(s) such as department, college, and/or center/institute.

Graduate School matching funds must be used for direct support of pre-doctoral trainees.

Additional requirements and deadlines apply to the NSF Research Traineeship (NRT) Program and and NSF Innovations in Graduate Education (IGE) Program.

How Are Match Amounts Determined?

Matching amounts depend on:

  • Total direct cost (TDC) requested to the funding agency.
  • Number of pre-doctoral trainees that will be supported on the grant per year and number of years of support requested.
  • Average stipend currently being offered by the trainees' programs.
  • Amount of matching support from other University unit(s).
  • Availability of funding for the current year budget allocation.

How Do I Apply?

For training grants other than the NSF NRT, complete and submit the Request for Training Grant Matching Fund Form with the appropriate information and signatures.

Request forms should be submitted no less than four weeks before the proposal is due at Sponsored Projects Administration (SPA). If approved, a commitment memo will be provided.
