What is a Graduate Recruitment Ambassador?

The Graduate School Diversity Office Graduate Recruitment Ambassador (GSDO-GRA) will serve as a liaison to their college and broadly represent the 130+ research-based graduate programs across the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities (UMN) and the University of Minnesota-Duluth (UMD). This position will primarily support the Outreach and Recruitment Pillar of the Graduate School Diversity Office (GSDO) in its goal to recruit a diverse graduate student body to the University.

WHAT IS THE STIPEND FOR THIS ROLE?

$450 (Spring 2024 and Summer 2024)

WHAT ARE THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF THIS ROLE?

Campus Visits:

  • Participate as a graduate student panelist.
  • Lead campus tours.
  • Campus visits are booked upon request year-round from prospective students and groups (Fall, Spring, Summer).

Diversity Recruitment Events:

  • Assist with GradX (Spring 2024).
  • Assist with the U of MN Graduate Programs Fair.

Mentoring Prospective Students:

  • Lead 15 to 30-minute information sessions.
  • Options: email, phone call, Zoom, or in-person meetings.
  • Available upon request.

Other Recruitment Initiatives/Events:

  • Contribute to in-person and virtual GSDO recruitment initiatives/events.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS ROLE?

Requirements:

(Must meet all of the following to be considered)

  • Current UMN or UMD graduate student pursuing a research-based Master’s/Ph.D.
  • Ability to articulate how your salient social identities impact your graduate education experience and connect with prospective students from marginalized backgrounds.
  • Demonstrate strong communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.
  • Exhibit engagement, dependability, and enthusiasm.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Availability, and Experience:

  • Active Community of Scholars Program participant.
  • Good academic standing.
  • Be able to commit from Spring 2024 to Summer 2024.
  • Desire and commitment to working within and supporting a welcoming, cohesive team dynamic.

WHAT ARE THE EXPECTATIONS OF THIS ROLE?

  • Complete training required.
  • Attend all monthly check-ins.
  • Complete semester surveys and feedback.
  • Graduate School employees are currently working in a hybrid mode (some time remote and some time on campus). Graduate Recruitment Ambassadors can expect some assignments to occur in person and some remotely.

WHAT IS THE TIMELINE FOR SELECTING AMBASSADORS?

  • The application form will close on Friday, December 29th, 2023,11:59 PM CT.
  •  If you meet the qualifications, you may expect to be invited to a 30-minute Zoom interview shortly after your application submission.
  • Ambassadors will be announced before the beginning of the Spring 2024 school year.
  • Onboarding and training will begin after ambassadors have been announced.
